The game opens with a samurai stabbing and slashing his way through a castle. There's a story, too – the whole point of the game is to save the princess. Combat is snappy and visceral, which suits the shoddy animation, but the controls are anything but intuitive.
Monster X The first Monster X game, the series continues to be as bizarre as its predecessor. Enjoy winning battles, collect shells and make your monster stronger. But don't expect anything more than a feeble action-platformer – the whole concept just doesn't translate into a good game.
Unmei 01 Some of the most elegantly simple platforming games ever made: you control a circle, jumping on tiles to progress. The atmosphere is eerie, and the music adds to the fantasy.
Unmei 02 Now you can lead a party of the human race into battle against a demon horde. The arcade-like gameplay is extremely simple, and the enemies are also very simple – in fact, there are no story elements. The graphics and music are superb, and the sense of speed is utterly intoxicating.
Hardcore
Asura This first foray into the world of hardcore gaming is heavy on the first-person shooting. Asura takes the simple gameplay of games like Doom and Quake and puts a serious emphasis on it. There are tons of levels and even a story, but this isn't the sort of game where you can just relax and enjoy yourself.
Dark Waters This is a mad hardcore game: you play as a little mermaid, who, when you dive deep down in the waters, will be faced with a couple of snakes. The gameplay is easy, though, so it's possible to get through the game in a couple of days. There are two endings, but you have to get through the game to find them.
Final Fantasy IV The legendary game that got the JRPG genre started in the 90s. This is the first in the series to be dubbed Final Fantasy, and it includes a beautiful, vibrant world and some great, chunky gameplay. The only real problem is the combat, which is extremely basic.
Haze While Haze doesn't take the term hardcore quite literally, it does provide just about as much adrenaline as you could want. If you're at all squeamish about blood and gore, you should probably leave this game alone. The title's plot
